VpeSetupPrinter and PRS files

Postby IDEAL Software Support » Tue Nov 23, 2004 4:51 pm

I have a question about VpeSetupPrinter which is not answered in the
help file.

I want to use VpeSetupPrinter in a multi-user environment.
This means there are several workplaces (that have installed the
same printerdriver) that are using a single .PRS file.

Is this possible?
Can 2 workstations load the .PRS file at the same time?
Because every time the .PRS file is loaded, it is changed.

What happens if a workplace with an other (older) printerdriver will
try to load the .PRS file? Will the .PRS file be changed?

Or is it best to make a .PRS file for each workstation?

The PRS file is printer driver dependent.

As long as you are using *exactly* the same printer driver with the
*exact* same version, it is no problem to share a single PRS file on
multiple workstations.

If there are different printer drivers, or equal printer drivers in
different versions, the PRS file must be created per workstation.

Yes, it can be shared. The PRS file should not change, if you use
SetupPrinter() with the flag PRINTDLG_ONFAIL.

Thorsten,

Thanks.
When I said the file changes, I actually meant that the file date
and file time change, every time the file is read.
But if you say there's no problem in a multi-user environment, it
should be ok.

We checked the source code, indeed VPE always writes the setup file
(except there was an error, or the user clicked the cancel button), it
does not check whether any settings in the printer setup dialog have
been modified. However, this shouldn't be any problem for using it in a
multi-user environment.
