Unicode support

Hi Thorsten,

I've read up on all the previous Unicode threads and wondered if you could give any kind of timescale for VPE to include unicode. We have clients that require Arabic and English output on the same document without changing the OS locale to Arabic (they have an English OS and switch between Arabic/English for keyboard input).

I hope that makes sense.

Hi Dave,

arabic and english can already be done within a single VPE document by switching the character set. But VPE does not support itself right to left text output.

We have currently no specific date for implementing Unicode, but it is in the top-three of our to-do list. We would like to have this done until the end of 2008, but I can not give any release date or promise before we haven't started to implement it.

It is a very big task, since it requires a completely new internal layout engine, which must support cross-platform text rendering. We can not use Windows functions.
