VPE Preview e-mail button 32 bit vs 64 bit

Currently using VPE in a 32 bit environment with Outlook in a 32 bit environment. Our users use the preview and then use the e-mail button frequently. If we migrate to 64 bit, will the e-mail button work if I also switch over to Outlook 64 bit?

32-bit applications require a 32-bit e-mail client and 64-bit applications require a 64-bit e-mail client. So the general answer is yes.

I write "general", because in our most recent test on Windows 11, when we set Outlook as default mail application, nothing happened when we clicked the e-mail button in the VPE preview. Moreover, when we reverted back to Thunderbird (the mail client we use daily), also nothing happened. Before, Thunderbird was working.

So you will have to find out for yourself, what Microsoft invented there and how to make it work. We are just annoyed by Microsoft.

Good news! The matter has not left us in peace and we have investigated the problem further.

The version of Outlook that is installed with Windows 11 ("Outlook (new)") does not support Simple MAPI nor Extended MAPI and is therefore useless in this respect. Instead of "Outlook (new)", we recommend using Thunderbird.

We then installed the latest Outlook from Microsoft Office 365, which indeed supports both Simple and Extended MAPI. However, we encountered a bug in VPE with 64-bit Extended MAPI, which leads to a crash. The bug will be fixed in the coming days with a new service release. By default, VPE uses Simple MAPI, so in regular this is no issue.

Note: If a Simple MAPI client is installed in parallel to Outlook, such as Thunderbird in our case, you have to call VpeSetMAPIType(hDoc, VMAPI_TYPE_EXTENDED) in your source code to force the use of Extended MAPI, which will then call Outlook.
