Update: We have been testing Visual Basic 6 with Windows 7.
Windows 7 reports at several points during the installation that Visual Studio 6 is not supported, but finally the installation of Visual Basic 6 completes.
But Visual Basic 6 did not function properly, unless we started it with administrative privileges.
We finally created a small test program using Visual Basic 6 and the VPE ActiveX, which also displays the VPE preview window. It worked flawlessly when being run from the Visual Basic 6 IDE. There is no error shown and the IDE does not crash. This proves for us that there is no problem within the VPE ActiveX.
