On the .net vpe version 6.0 the preview() method displays the preview page correctly. I can click the minus (-) zoom button and the document reduces its size. When I however click the plus (+) zoom button nothing happens.
Am I missing something?

Yes, you missed to read the docs. 
If you click the plus button, this activates the zoom tool. I.e. the mouse cursor becomes a magnifying glass and you can zoom in by clicking into the preview. When clicking into the preview, the clicked position becomes the new center of the zoomed preview.
A second function of the zoom tool is to zoom into a rectangluar area. This is done by clicking the left mouse button and dragging a rectangle into which the preview shall be zoomed.
