E-mail error: Either there is no default mail client ...

Postby Bengt » Thu Nov 07, 2013 8:23 pm

When clicking the E-mail button in VPE preview I get an error message: “Either there is no default mail client or the current mail cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client”
I changed computer a few month ago and it might be so that I haven’t tried to send mail from VPE preview before. I use Win 7 Professional 64 bit and Outlook 64 bit. No other mail program is installed and it works fine when sending normal mails.
I tried sending mail both from programs using VPE 6.1 and VPE 3.6 and I got the same error.

This is Microsoft at its best: When sending e-mail from a 32-bit application, you need to install a 32-bit mail client.

Which 32 bit mail client would you recommend? From another thread I got the idea that Windows Live Mail would work so I installed it and set it as default mail program, but it doesn't seem to work. Windows Live Mail is on the start button but when I click it an hourglass is showed some seconds, but nothing else happens, and Windows Live Mail is not among the programs on the Task Manager.

When I now start Outlook, there is a message that Outlook is not the default mail program.

When I try to send an E-mail from a VPE preview, nothing happens, not even the old error message is shown.

What can I do? I need to test sending E-mail form VPE now and then. Do I need to switch to a 32 bit computer?

You do not need to switch to another computer. We are using Thunderbird, and it is working perfectly. You need to set it as the default mail client in the Windows Control Panel.

BTW: We are using a Linux server as our central mail server. It is an IMAP server, which is working since 10 years without ever having a single problem. Never lost a single mail or had any defective databases. The administrative work is nearly zero, and automated backup is configured within 5 minutes. The mail storage format is in the common mbox format, nothing proprietary. Mails can be transferred to other severs, or even to Mac OS X by just copying the files. If you - or your clients - can avoid using an Exchange server with Outlook, we definitely recommend to use a Linux IMAP server with Thunderbird. This way you can also use mobile devices with Android and iOS to remotely access your mail accounts. We never did regret to be independent of the MS mail stuff. And best of all: Linux and Thunderbird do cost nothing.

It works with Thunderbird after changing some default settings made at installation. It wasn't possible to let the sent messages be saved at the mail account. After changing to local maps sending messages worked.

However, to me this problem seems to be a ticking bomb. None of my customers has reported it yet, but when they change to 64 bit computers and get this problem, I don't think they will be happy. As I understand it, they have to change from Outlook to some other mail program, and that will not be popular. Changing from a program you are used to is always a hard work. Is there really no other solution?

You should direct your complaints to Microsoft. They should have implemented at least some internal interface, so that calls to Simple MAPI or Extended MAPI from a 32-bit application are routed to any installed 64-bit mail client, if no 32-bit mail client is installed.

But at present - and to our best knowledge - it is as follows:
If you have a 32-bit application, you will need a 32-bit mail client.
If you have a 64-bit application, you will need a 64-bit mail client.

If anyone has made a different experience, please let us know.

VPE will be available soon as 64-bit version, but then your application has to be 64-bit, too.
